Apprenticeship in India: How It Works, Stipend and Career Benefits

An apprenticeship is paid on-the-job training at a recognised establishment, governed in India by the Apprentices Act, 1961. It is one of the best ways for ITI, diploma and graduate candidates to gain real experience at organisations such as railways, PSUs, defence units, banks and private companies. Many recruitments also give preference or extra marks to candidates who have completed an apprenticeship.

Types of apprentices

Type Who can apply Where to register

Stipend

Apprentices receive a monthly stipend. Minimum rates are notified by the government and depend on the qualification; many organisations pay more than the minimum. The exact amount is stated in each notification. Under government schemes, part of the stipend may be shared with the employer.

How to apply

  1. Register on the correct portal (NAPS or NATS) and complete your profile with educational details.
  2. Watch for apprentice notifications from railways, PSUs and companies; many also announce them on their own websites.
  3. Apply through the portal or the link given in the notification before the last date.
  4. Selection is usually based on merit in the qualifying exam; some organisations hold a test or interview.
  5. Complete document verification and medical tests, then sign the apprenticeship contract.

Benefits beyond the stipend

  • Practical skills on real machines and processes, which written study cannot give.
  • A government-recognised certificate on completion.
  • Advantage in recruitment: several organisations reserve posts or give preference to their own trained apprentices.
  • Better chances in private hiring because you have documented experience.

Tips for apprentices

  • Treat the apprenticeship like a job: punctuality and discipline are noticed.
  • Keep a log of the work you learn; it helps in interviews later.
  • Collect the completion certificate and any appreciation letters carefully.
