How to Write a Resume for Government and PSU Jobs (Format + Example)

Most government recruitments use an online application form, so many candidates never prepare a resume. But a resume is still needed for walk-in interviews, contract and project posts, PSU and bank interviews, and every private job. A clear one-page or two-page resume also helps you fill application forms accurately because all your details are in one place.

The format that works best
- Header: full name, mobile number, email, city and state. A photo only if the notification asks for one.
- Objective or summary: two lines about your qualification and the role you want.
- Education: latest first, with board or university, year and percentage or CGPA, exactly as in your certificates.
- Experience: organisation, designation, dates (month and year) and three or four duties or achievements.
- Skills: computer skills (with certificates such as CCC or O Level), typing speed, languages, technical tools.
- Certifications and training: apprenticeships, NCC, NSS, internships, online courses.
- Personal details: date of birth, category (only if relevant to the post), languages known.
- Declaration: one line confirming the information is true, with place, date and signature.
Example summary lines
- Graduate (B.Com) with Tally and CCC certification and typing speed of 35 wpm, seeking a clerical or accounts assistant post.
- Diploma in Electrical Engineering with one-year apprenticeship at a power utility, seeking a technician or junior engineer role.
- B.Sc Nursing with two years of ICU experience, seeking a staff nurse position.
Write duties as results
| Weak | Strong |
|---|---|
| Did data entry work. | Entered and verified 300+ beneficiary records daily with zero-error audits. |
| Handled customers. | Resolved 40 to 50 customer queries a day at the branch help desk. |
| Worked on a project. | Collected and analysed field samples for a state-funded water quality project. |
Rules for government-style resumes
- Every date, mark and name must match your certificates and the application form exactly.
- Use a simple font, black text and clear headings. Avoid colourful templates and charts.
- Keep it to one page for freshers and two pages for experienced candidates.
- Save it as a PDF named with your full name.
- Never include false experience or skills; verification can end your candidature or even your job later.
Biodata vs resume vs CV
A biodata focuses on personal details and is still requested in some government and walk-in formats. A resume is a short summary for a specific job. A CV is longer and used for academic and research posts, listing publications, projects and conferences. When a notification gives a format, always follow that format exactly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I add a photo to my resume?
Only when the notification or employer asks for it. Otherwise it is not needed.
How long should a fresher resume be?
One page is enough for most freshers.
Do I mention my category on a resume?
Only if the post is reserved or the format asks for it; your certificate is the proof that matters.
