7 Resume Mistakes That Get Job Applications Rejected

Recruiters and selection committees often scan a resume in under a minute. If something looks careless or does not match your documents, your application may go to the bottom of the pile. These seven mistakes are the most common, and all of them are easy to fix.

On this page

1. Details that do not match your certificates

Different spellings of your name, a wrong date of birth or a rounded-off percentage creates doubt during verification. Copy details exactly from your 10th certificate and mark sheets, and use the same details in every application.

2. A generic objective

“To work in a reputed organisation” says nothing. Write one or two lines that name the type of role and your strongest qualification, for example “ITI Electrician with NAPS apprenticeship seeking a technician post in a power utility”.

3. Duties without results

List what you achieved, with numbers where possible: records handled per day, patients attended, students taught, targets met. Numbers make your experience real.

4. Missing skills that the job asks for

If the notification asks for typing speed, computer certificates or a language, show it clearly in a skills section. Selection committees check for the keywords in the eligibility criteria.

5. Poor formatting

  • Fancy templates, photos in the background and many colours make printing and reading hard.
  • Very small fonts or long paragraphs hide key information.
  • Inconsistent date formats look careless. Choose one, such as “Jan 2025 – Mar 2026”.

6. Spelling and grammar errors

Read your resume aloud, use a spell-checker and ask a friend to review it. Errors suggest a lack of care, especially for clerical, teaching and administrative roles where accuracy is part of the job.

7. Wrong file and email habits

  • Name the file properly, for example Ravi_Kumar_Resume.pdf, not final_new_2.docx.
  • Send PDFs unless a Word file is requested.
  • Use a professional email address with your name.
  • Write a short, polite email body; never send an empty email with an attachment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it okay to use a resume template?

Yes, if it is simple and readable. Avoid heavy graphics and tables that break when printed.

Should I list every course I have done?

List the ones relevant to the job. Too many unrelated courses distract from your main strengths.

How often should I update my resume?

Every time you finish a course, change jobs or gain a new skill, and before each application.
